Digital preservation in photographic collection: a study on the brasiliana fotográfica digital curatorship portal

Abstract

Introduction: This research aims to analyze the digital preservation strategies adopted in a historical digital photographic collection, Brasiliana Fotográfica. This portal was implemented through a partnership between the National Library and the Moreira Salles Institute. It has the collaboration of three partner institutions that provide images to be disseminated in the portal's virtual environment. The items found are photographic images from the 19th and 20th centuries that were digitized and are currently available for access in the National Digital Library of Brazil - BNDigital. Objective: To analyze the digital preservation strategies adopted by Brasiliana Fotográfica in order to protect the digitized material and make it available for access by future generations. Methodology: The study presents a qualitative, exploratory and descriptive approach with bibliographic research. Results: The concepts of digital preservation, digital curation, as well as the theoretical framework and the analysis of the National Library's digital preservation policy were included. Conclusion: The research analyzes the Digital Curation portal, Brasiliana Fotográfica, through the aspects of digital preservation of digitized historical photographs. Highlighting the importance of preserving and storing this material for later access by future generations.
