EDUCATION DOCUMENTATION CENTER - CDEP
ABSTRACT
This article discusses the role of the Paulistana Education Documentation Center (CDEP),
affiliated with the São Paulo Municipal Department of Education, as a space for the
preservation, dissemination, and promotion of São Paulo's educational history. Created in 2023,
the CDEP gathers and organizes documentary, iconographic, and three-dimensional collections
that document the trajectory of public education since the 1930s. Composed of three centers—
the Pedagogical Library, the Documentary Memory, and the Municipal Education Memorial—
the center constitutes an important repository of school material culture, contributing to the
production of knowledge and the consolidation of the city's educational heritage. This article
analyzes the practices of storage, conservation, and access to the collections, as well as their
potential as research sources on the history of education in São Paulo. The investigation is
anchored in the assumptions of Cultural History and studies on heritage and memory,
recognizing the CDEP as a space for enculturation and reflection on the collective identity of
educational institutions. Based on the analysis of documents, objects, and images, it is evident
that the CDEP collection broadens the understanding of the materiality of schools and the forms
of production and circulation of knowledge in the São Paulo educational context, reaffirming
its relevance for the preservation and appreciation of the historical and cultural memory of
municipal public education.
