experiencia.
perspectiva intercultural.

THE CRAFT OF THE PANELEIRAS OF GOIABEIRAS VELHA
ABSTRACT
This article analyzes photographs of the craft of the Paneleiras of Goiabeiras Velha, recognized
as Brazilian intangible cultural heritage, seeking to understand how images produce meanings
about heritage and can mediate dialogues among Heritage Education, Visual Culture, and
Science Education. Drawing on the contributions of Martine Joly and Umberto Eco, the study
understands photography as a cultural artifact and an interpretive practice shaped by visual
codes, memories, and historically situated experiences. The corpus comprises photographs of
the craft, including images produced by the Paneleiras themselves, enabling a discussion of
processes of self-representation and the production of visualities concerning heritage. The
analysis shows that the images go beyond a documentary function by making observable
gestures, materials, techniques, and forms of knowledge transmission constituted through
relationships among body, matter, territory, and experience. In this context, photography
enables connections between knowledge produced through the practice itself and school science
knowledge, fostering reflections on different ways of observing, experimenting with, and
interpreting the material world. It is concluded that, when articulated with the narratives and
cultural contexts of the craft, photography can serve as a device for interpreting and
problematizing heritage, contributing to educational practices that are sensitive to the plurality
of ways of knowing and to an intercultural perspective.
