PUBLIC AUTHORITIES AND POPULAR ACTIONS: INTERPRETATIONS OF THE
HISTORICAL HERITAGE IN/FROM NOVA IGUAÇU
ABSTRACT
The article inventories and examines interpretations of the heritage of the municipality of Nova
Iguaçu, located in the Rio de Janeiro metropolitan area, based on museological actions about
the history of the territory. Using bibliographic, documentary, and field research methods, we
identified actions carried out by the municipal government and by popular initiatives. Drawing
on theoretical contributions about collective memory and heritage, with an emphasis on the
processes of attributing value and meaning to cultural assets, we investigate interpretations of
local heritage, grounded in the interests of social groups who, starting from their experiences,
values, and meanings, produce different frameworks around local memory. The results from
analyzing the creation of municipal museums, exhibition catalogs, archaeological parks,
community museums, ecomuseums, and manifestos reveal the deeper reach of local political
and economic elites' interventions, reinforcing power dynamics and inequalities regarding the
right to memory. On the other hand, new worldviews are brought to life through popular actions
by civil society, which influence different choices of periods, memories, events, and educational
practices. The comparative analysis highlights the importance of interpreting heritage as a
critical tool to promote a diversity of narratives, knowledge, and perspectives, but also shows
that the balance of economic, political, and social power among those engaged in the right to
the territory’s history and in heritage disputes is unequal.
Keywords: territory; museum; heritage.
