Artificial intelligence in the preservation of digitally based cultural heritage

Abstract

Introduction: This study proposes to broaden the debate on the digital preservation of digitally  based cultural heritage, considering the implications, limitations, and opportunities associated with Artificial Intelligence (AI). Given the growing production of digital works and the need to ensure their longevity, we seek to introduce the debate on new technologies into the field of cultural heritage preservation. Objective: The purpose of this study is to contribute to the debate on the digital preservation of digitally based cultural heritage, articulating theoretical concepts and case studies that allow for discussion of recurrences, challenges, and possible directions for the use of Artificial Intelligence in preservation practices. Methodology: The methodology adopted is a theoretical and exploratory one, based on technical documents and works in the field of digital arts. The research proposes a conceptual and comparative analysis of existing approaches, seeking to identify gaps and emerging perspectives in the integration between AI and digital preservation. Results: It was found that, thus far, there are no records of consolidated discussions on the use of Artificial Intelligence in preservation actions focused on digitally created cultural heritage. Conclusion: Although Artificial Intelligence is not yet directly associated with preservation techniques, it is possible to expand the reflection on its role in digital works themselves, which may result in new forms of ‘creative preservation.’ From this perspective, the preservationist dimension of digital works is manifested by the expansion of their functions and the incorporation of technological processes that favour their continuity and reinterpretation over time.
