Smart digital preservation: infrastructure, sustainability, and memory [Editorial]

Abstract

This editorial inaugurates volume 7 (2026) of the Revista Brasileira de Preservação Digital, consolidating a milestone of institutional renewal. It records the transition of executive leadership from the State University of Campinas (Unicamp) to the National Library, in cooperation with Ibict, integrating the former editor-in-chief into the National Editorial Board. The co-editor from Ibict remains on the team, ensuring the journal's scientific stability. Under the title "Smart Digital Preservation: Infrastructure, Sustainability, and Memory", this edition reflects the contemporary complexity of the field in the face of technological advancements. Within the scope of original and review articles, the studies articulate artificial intelligence with heritage safeguarding, the strategic role of repositories in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (2030 Agenda), and the structural interoperability between RDC-Arq and SIGAD. Additionally, it evaluates the applicability of blockchain technology (Trustchain) against the OAIS and e-Arq Brasil models, mediation in historical collections, the preservation of intangible heritage, and the diagnosis of institutional policies via the Cariniana Network. Finally, a book review maps the state of the art in the field, authored by the editor-in-chief, and anticipates the announcement of the commemorative dossier for the 20th anniversary of BNDigital, to be released later this year.
