Abstract

Introduction: Latex allergy, an IgE-mediated hypersensitivity response, represents a significant risk in hospital environments, especially during surgery. Severe reactions, such as anaphylaxis, can jeopardize patient safety. Objective: To analyze the implementation of a latex allergy management protocol in a highly complex public hospital between January 2021 and August 2024, assessing its effectiveness in reducing complications and promoting patient safety, including in emergency situations. Method: a retrospective observational study of 42 patients, 25 males and 17 females, aged between 1 and 12 years, treated in neurosurgery, pediatric surgery, urology and orthopedics. The protocol was applied in elective and emergency surgeries, assessing allergic complications, adherence to the protocol and team preparation. Only one case of complication was recorded, characterized by a simple rash during anesthetic induction. Results: The protocol significantly prevented serious complications, such as anaphylaxis, and ensured patient safety. There was a progressive increase in latex-allergic patients, from 9 cases in 2021 to 17 by August 2024, reflecting growing confidence in the protocol. Conclusion: It can be concluded that the implementation of the protocol was effective in preventing serious complications, reinforcing the importance of preventive measures and continuous training for teams. Even in emergency settings, the protocol contributed to patient safety and minimized intraoperative risks.
