Abstract
Introduction: Hypnosis has been used in dentistry as a complementary tool to reduce pain and fear, both in the pre-surgical period and during the dental procedure. Many patients at the Dentistry Service (SO) of the Hospital de Clínicas (HC) of UNICAMP need to have their teeth extracted prior to chemotherapy, radiotherapy or organ transplantation and are too afraid to undergo these procedures. Using rapid hypnosis techniques, these patients are able to carry out the procedures without any fear or pain. Objective: To demonstrate the effectiveness of using the hypnosis technique to control fear and pain in the treatment of patients at (S)/HC/UNICAMP. Methodology: After the patient reported that they were too scared to undergo the surgical procedure of tooth extraction, we applied the Surgical Fear Questionnaire. The patient is given clear instructions on the possibility of pre- and trans-surgical hypnosis, and after signing the consent form, Dave Elman's Rapid Hypnosis Technique is applied. Afterwards, the patient is awakened from the hypnotic trance and their subjective experience of hypnosis and pain perception is evaluated. Results: Practical benefits of hypnosis in surgical dental procedures reduced sedation and anesthesia; greater patient cooperation; faster recovery. Conclusion: Hypnosis is a powerful and effective tool for helping patients at SO/HC/UNICAMP. It offers a non-invasive approach that can significantly improve the patient experience, reduce the need for medication and facilitate recovery.
