Innovation and Efficiency in the Conservation Atelier: process improvement

Abstract

Introduction: The Restoration and Conservation Atelier of the Library was restructured in 2021 to meet the increased demand for book repair and conservation services. Objectives: The project aims to optimize the operation of the Restoration and Conservation Atelier of the Library, with the following goals: Meet the increased demand for book repair and conservation services. Improve workflow efficiency and team integration. Implement systematic processes for book cleaning, repair, and binding. Reduce costs associated with outsourcing these services. Preserve the Special Collection "Mário Schenberg." Promote user awareness regarding the preservation of the library’s collection. Methodology: The move to a larger space within the library allowed for greater workflow efficiency and improved team integration. Results: The Atelier implemented a systematic process for book cleaning, repair, and binding, resulting in a 372.72% increase in the number of treated works and a 93.18% cost saving compared to outsourcing these services. The work also includes the preservation of the "Mário Schenberg" Special Collection, with personalized attention to each item. Additionally, awareness campaigns and training sessions were implemented to educate users on preserving the library’s collection. Conclusion: The restructuring and expansion of the Atelier's space, along with the systematization of processes, brought significant gains in the efficiency of its services and a considerable reduction in costs. The Atelier has established itself as a sustainable and replicable model for other institutions, ensuring the preservation of bibliographic heritage.
