Abstract
The first references to the notion of Western Marxism can be traced back to successive debates in the years 1920, after the publication of Lukác’s History and class consciousness and Korsch’s Marxism and Philosophy. They will reappear in 1955, with Merleau-Ponty’s Les aventures de la dialectique, where the “Western Marxism” of Lukács is opposed to Leninism. However, it will be only after 1976, with PerryAnderson’s Considerations on Western Marxism, that the concept will have a large spread, becoming a paradigm which will serve to characterize a large part of the theoretical production of Marxism developed in the West since 1920. The purpose of this article is to demonstrate the arbitrary character of the concept, founded on broad generalizations, which rather than being an instrument of periodization and analysis, become an obstacle to a historical reconstruction of the Marxist tradition in the twentieth century.
