Abstract
On January 1, 1994, at the exact moment that the Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) between the United States, Mexico and Canada came into effect, the Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN) emerged on the Mexican political scene. The “masked” occupied five cities in the state of Chiapas, in southern Mexico, declaring war on the Mexican army, demanding the resignation of President Carlos Salinas de Gortari and calling on “civil society” to overcome the one-party state system that had monopolized power for 70 years.
