Abstract

Arrighi's study, the result of fifteen years of research, spans several centuries of economic history. In fact, the twentieth long century of the title occupies about a third of the book, despite the author's warning about the "strictly instrumental nature" of his "forays into the past" (p. X). The book is dense and controversial. This commentary seeks only to indicate some of its central concerns.
