Abstract
The death of Belgian socialist thinker Ralph Miliband, shortly after his 70th birthday, in late 1994, leaves a rich intellectual and political legacy for all Marxist activists. His life, work and political practice were marked by the incessant discussion and defense of socialism. Contrary to the wave of contrition that has been sweeping the global left in recent times, the editor of the English magazines New Left Review and The Socialist Register (his co-editor since 1964) and contributor to the North American magazine Monthly Review, remained convinced of the relevance of Marxist thought and the historical possibilities of socialism.
