Interview with Ian Angus on ecosocialism as a systemic alternative to the Anthropocene catastrophe

Abstract

This interview sought to cover various topics considered relevant to contemporary discussions on confronting the Anthropocene and the ecosocialist movement. Ian Angus, a Canadian activist for decades, understands that the development of the Anthropocene, which has recently exceeded seven of the nine planetary boundaries, poses a great risk to the future of humanity and various other species. Thus, Angus considers the International Geological Society's refusal to recognize the Anthropocene as a new epoch to be a step backward. The author opposes perspectives that defend the possibility of green capitalism, as well as rejects the productivist experiences of the Soviet Union, arguing that none of them were able to overcome the metabolic rift with nature. Finally, Ian Angus advocates for an ecosocialism that is anchored in the struggle to end capitalism and seeks to build a harmonious relationship with nature, drawing on the struggles that are already underway, especially in the Global South.
