Abstract
This academic obituary pays tribute to Jorge Lobo Miglioli (1935–2025), a Marxist economist who played a central role in shaping critical macroeconomics and developmentalist thought in Brazil. Combining intellectual biography, political engagement, and personal memory, the text reconstructs Miglioli’s pioneering contributions to the introduction of Karl Marx and Michał Kalecki into Brazilian economic debate, as well as his foundational work on effective demand, economic planning, and the critique of mainstream economics. A historical member of the Brazilian Communist Party, a formative teacher of generations of students, and an intellectual deeply committed to social emancipation, Miglioli consistently articulated theory and practice in a context marked by dictatorship, exile, and historical disillusionment. The text also underscores his pedagogical ethos and human qualities, emphasising friendship, critical intellectual formation, and political integrity as enduring dimensions of his legacy.
