The way speech varies in expressing social and individual meanings has motivated work in
different areas of linguistic studies. From a sociophonetic point of view, it is possible to observe,
for example, how social and linguistic factors condition the diversity of ways in which phonemes
are realized. Phonetic studies on variation and expression can also shed light on how speech
production and perception manifest themselves in different communicative contexts and involve
the use of expressive resources in singing, dubbing or character composition. Furthermore, the
theme of variation and expression is also important to applied areas of phonetics, such as
forensic phonetics, in the investigation of intra- and inter-speaker variation, and speech
technology, in the development and improvement of products and techniques involving data
analysis. In this thematic volume, we will welcome articles that address the intersection between
speech, variation and expression from a phonetic perspective. Research done with this
panorama in the field of sociophonetics, linguistic phonetics, as well as applied phonetics is
welcome.
We invite researchers on Speech Sciences (Phonetics, Applied Phonetics, and Sociophonetics)
to submit original articles for the thematic call of JoSS on 'Speech, Variation, and Expression'.
