Abstract
Through photographic analysis, stone, as a constitutive element of the historic city of Toledo (Spain), ceases to be perceived as a static component and is instead revealed as an active medium of memory and a means of understanding urban identity and the contemporary processes involved in the symbolic construction of heritage. Drawing on a visually based methodology with an ethnographic orientation, this research proposes a hierarchical and complementary reading of the built environment, transferable to the study of other heritage contexts. Photography is thus conceived as a methodological and hermeneutic tool capable of mediating between materiality and the gaze, between the object and its interpretation.
