Abstract
Whatever its intrinsic qualities, the letter sent by Mrs. Beecher Stowe for Lord Shaftesbury had the merit of forcing the anti-Northern organs of the London press to expose to the general public the alleged reasons for their hostility towards the North and their poorly concealed sympathies towards the South. Let us note in passing that this is an attitude strange among people who express horror of slavery.
