Abstract

Leon Trotsky’s most radical critics have often made the claim that the Ukrainian revolutionary did not understand the racial question. This article is not intended to suggest that Trotsky gave any kind of “revolutionary answer to the Negro question”, but will simply attempt to defend him from the charges leveled against him. That is, defending him against the accusation of political opportunism on the one hand and rude philistinism on the other. It is argued that, despite the inevitable limitations and shortcomings at some points, Trotsky generally demonstrated an instinctive sympathy and a keen desire for a deeper understanding of the black liberation struggle in the country, combined with an imagination characteristic of one of the greatest revolutionaries of the classical Marxist tradition.
