Abstract
The political limit of liberalism was the legal equality of citizens. Citizens would be equal before the law. Possible equality would be equity. The starting point of Marxism was the critique of capital, therefore, of the right to private property. Freedom would not be possible among unequals. Marxists fight for equity, but their project is social equality. The discussion of quotas opened up a controversy, with some defending the meritocratic principle, and others defending affirmative policies.
