Abstract
As we know, neoliberalism does not mince words when naming its enemies: mass democracy and its perverse children, the welfare state and the unions. The curses are pronounced in the name of values that are intended to be a priori and universal, of an ethical and political nature: these demons threaten freedom and any possibility of order in the human world. But they also appeal to a consequentialist criterion: judgments are equally based on supposed criteria of efficiency and progress. Adopting an apocalyptic diagnosis, the new market fundamentalism prepares a frank and boldly conservative salvationist recipe: subjugating the unions and imposing harsh economic reforms, “freeing” capital from the controls that had been imposed on it by two hundred years of popular struggles.
