Abstract

Empire or republic? The title of Petras and Morley's book perhaps requires clarification. Since their beginnings as a nation, the former British colonies in America have seen intense controversy arise over the relationship between internal prosperity and democracy and the ability to increase their physical and commercial borders. Does building an empire weaken or strengthen the republic?
