Abstract
The 20th century began with the debate on the theme of imperialism and is ending with the discussion on globalization. What is the relationship between these two concepts and realities within the history of capitalist accumulation and socialist critique? Is there continuity or rupture? What are the implications for socialist action and theory in the problem posed? I believe these are the terms for a debate such as the one proposed here. The first formulations on imperialism, from those of liberals like Hobson to those of the socialist Kautsky, seek to interpret it as a deviation, produced by declining social forces, in the trajectory of civilizational progress in the West.
