Abstract
Social mobility can be measured using several indicators, and there is no consensus on which is the most appropriate. Many studies developed by economists in recent decades investigate the "Great Gatsby Curve", which is a relationship between mobility and measures of inequality of the income distribution. This study shows that there is a Great Gatsby Curve for Brazil, that is, there is a statistically significant association between measures of intergenerational social mobility and indices of income distribution inequality in the 27 states of the Federation. Microdata from the 2014 PNAD (national household sample survey) are used, and it is verified that this relationship exists for different measures of intergenerational social mobility and various indices of inequality. The analysis of this relationship contributes to clarify the conceptual differences between the numerous measures of social mobility used. A new measure of intergenerational persistence is presented: the mutual information between the distributions of status between parents and between children.
