Abstract
In this visual essay, images of paintings that allude to open-air markets are presented, with particular emphasis on the "Itararé" open-air market, located in the central region of São Paulo (SP), Brazil. The market, as a symbol of the connection between the countryside and the city, is vividly represented in the paintings through the expressive use of color, which distinguishes it from, and contrasts with, the material and symbolic grays of the metropolis. The essay constitutes part of the dissertation “Pinturas Livres” (2023), authored by me, and developed within the graduate program at the Institute of Arts of the University of Campinas (PPGIA/UNICAMP).
