Zulmiro de Carvalho: The Exemplary Works

Abstract

This article is based on the identification of works by Zulmiro de Carvalho presented in exhibition contexts and discussed from the point of view of their conceptual, material, formal and processual exemplarity, providing an overview of his work. The works shown in exhibitions – sculptures and drawings – are complemented by pieces of limited circulation that clarify his role in the cultural context and his position in a personal and social environment. The works under analysis are considered emblematic of the coherence, the consistence and the persistence of the issues addressed, and of their relevance to the understanding of a trajectory that has marked Portuguese sculpture from the 1960s to the present day.
