Graffiti, murals, and the geography of gentrificationon the slopes of Morro do Pinto

Abstract

Graffiti was once regarded as an expression of underprivileged social groups that, in some ways, seemed to vandalize urban life. More recently, graffiti has been perceived as a partner in the revitalization and beautification of decaying areas, as is the case of the Port District of Rio de Janeiro. After taking over the “baixada do porto,” graffiti has climbed the slopes of Morro do Pinto, contributing to a new social perception of the neighborhood as a cool hotspot for Rio’s nightlife. Based on these new sociocultural dynamics, early signs of gentrification are beginning to emerge. In this article, we examine the works of three urban artists—Vera Schueler, Alex Senna, and Lucas Cassarotti—whose art covers the walls and facades between the Bhering Factory and residences at the top of the hill.
