Abstract
Prof. Dr. Fabiano Couto Côrrea da Silva 's (UFRGS) talk at the SBU's 3rd Open Access Week on October 29, 2024, addressed Open Science and the crucial role of data in transforming knowledge. The speaker began with a comprehensive definition of Open Science, highlighting three pillars: Open Access, Data Sharing and Transparency. He then presented the main Brazilian institutions driving Open Science, such as MCTI, CNPq, CAPES, FAPs, RNP, Fiocruz, IBICT and SciELO. Fabiano detailed the actions of each institution, such as national policies, project funding, training, evaluation and digital infrastructure. He also addressed the role of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in promoting Open Science. The talk concluded with a presentation of 7 basic steps for transforming knowledge based on data: Data Curation, Data Visualization, Statistical and Qualitative Analysis, Data Analysis for Decision Making, Artificial Intelligence, Data Infrastructure Development and Participation in Citizen Science Projects. The presentation demonstrated how Open Science is a fundamental movement for the advancement of research and the democratization of knowledge.
