Machado de Assis: essays and random notes

Abstract

On the occasion of the centenary of the founding of the PCB, Editora Boitempo provides a great service to the Brazilian public by re-releasing Pereira Astrojildo's main works, now fully re-edited, equipped with a scholarly critical apparatus (introductions and blurbs) and supplemented by some of those scattered articles, the content of which relates to the main theme of each volume. One of these books is *Machado de Assis: Essays and Loose Notes*, originally published in 1959 and again provided with the informative introductory text, now updated, "Astrojildo: Politics and Culture," which José Paulo Netto, one of the best-known Marxist historians of communism in Brazil, wrote for the 1991 edition of the same book.
