Resumo
Os críticos mais radicais de Leon Trotsky têm frequentemente feito a afirmação de que ele não entendeu a questão racial. Este artigo não pretende sugerir que Trotsky tenha dado qualquer tipo de “resposta revolucionária à questão do negro”, mas simplesmente tenta defendê-lo das acusações levantadas contra ele: oportunismo político e rude filisteísmo. Argumenta-se que, apesar das inevitáveis limitações e deficiências em alguns pontos, Trotsky demonstrou, de modo geral, uma simpatia instintiva e um desejo aguçado por uma compreensão mais profunda da luta de libertação negra no país, combinados com uma imaginação característica de um dos maiores revolucionários da tradição marxista clássica.
