The Paulistana Education Documentation Center (CDEP) and Educational Heritage: Preservation, Memory and Culture School Material

Abstract

This article examines the role of the Documentation Center of Paulistana Education (CDEP), linked to the Municipal Department of Education of São Paulo, as a space for the preservation, dissemination, and appreciation of the city’s educational memory. Established in 2023, the CDEP gathers and organizes collections of documentary, iconographic, and three-dimensional materials that record the trajectory of public education since the 1930s. Composed of three main sections — the Pedagogical Library, the Documentary Memory, and the Municipal Education Memorial — the center constitutes an important repository of school material culture, contributing to the production of knowledge and the consolidation of São Paulo’s educational heritage. The study analyzes the practices of preservation, conservation, and access to these collections, as well as their potential as research sources in the history of education in São Paulo. Grounded in Cultural History and in studies on heritage and memory, the research recognizes the CDEP as a space of enculturation and reflection on the collective identity of educational institutions. By analyzing documents, objects, and images, the study highlights how the CDEP’s collections expand the understanding of the materiality of schooling and the processes of knowledge production and dissemination, reaffirming its relevance in preserving and valuing the historical and cultural memory of public education in São Paulo
