Abstract
The article discusses the last three editions of documenta (1997, 2002, 2007), especially the relationship between the effects of cultural globalisation on this international mega-exhibition and the town of Kassel, where the show, considered the leading contemporary art exhibition of the "biennial" genre, is held every five years. To this end, the text revisits the origins of documenta in the post-war period and its relationship with the "Degenerate Art" exhibition organised by the Nazis in 1937, as pointed out by art historians Hans Belting and Walter Grasskamp. Finally, an analysis of documenta 13 (2012) indicates the possibility of excavating a deep "archaeology" of the roots of this international exhibition in 19th century modernity.
