CATALOGUE RECORDS AND THE CHALLENGES OF PRESERVING AND MANAGING THE COLLECTION OF THE LOUIS JACQUES BRUNET NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM

Abstract

This article presents the results of the project to complete the catalogue records for the zoology collection of the Louis Jacques Brunet Natural History Museum, approved by FACEPE Public Notice 25/2022. The proposal aimed to continue the organization of the collection's documentation and was carried out over a period of 12 months. The methodology consisted of analyzing and recording the objects in the zoology collection and its subdivisions by systematically filling out catalogue records. Information on the type, state of conservation, measurements, and location of each item was recorded, ensuring the traceability and document management of the collection. With the participation of specialists, student monitors, and interns, 798 catalog cards were completed, which today constitute an organized database accessible to researchers, students, and the general public. Thus, it can be concluded that the project not only strengthens the management and preservation of the collection, but also reinforces the importance of public policies aimed at the conservation of educational heritage, ensuring access to and appreciation of the history of education in Pernambuco. Preservation, however, does not depend solely on documentation; it requires structural investments, adequate physical conditions, technical capacity, and the acquisition of digitization equipment to ensure the sustainability of the collection.

  • Virgínia Pereira da Silva de Ávila, University of Pernambuco, Petrolina Campus

    Bachelor's degree in Education from Faculdade Porto-Alegrense (FAPA, 1997), Master's degree in Education from the State University of Santa Catarina (UDESC, 2008), PhD in School Education from the Universidade Estadual Paulista Júlio de Mesquita Filho (UNESP, 2013) and Lecturer at the University of Pernambuco (UPE, 2020). She completed a postdoctoral internship in History of Education at the University of Lisbon (2019) and at the Polytechnic Institute of Leiria (2024). She is an associate professor at the University of Pernambuco (UPE), teaching in the Pedagogy course at the Petrolina Campus and in the Postgraduate Programme in Education at the Mata Norte Campus. She is a member of the editorial boards of Editora EDUPE and Revista de Extensão (REUPE). She coordinates the Educational Memory and Digital Scientific Dissemination Working Group, linked to the International Network for Research in Technologies and Education (REPETE), and participates in the Brazilian Network of School Museums and Collections (REBMAE). She is the leader of the Study and Research Group on the History of Education in Pernambuco (GEPHEPE) and is affiliated with the Brazilian Society for the History of Education (SBHE) and the Portuguese Association for the History of Education (HISTEDUP). She conducts research in the field of History of Education, with an emphasis on primary, secondary and normal schools in rural and urban contexts; teacher training; school institutions and archives; historical and educational heritage; memory and school culture.

    Bachelor's degree in Education from Faculdade Frassinetti do Recife, FAFIRE (1988), Specialist in School Management and Educational Planning from the Federal University of Pernambuco, UFPE, Specialist in Psychopedagogy from the University of Pernambuco, Master's student in Education at the University of Pernambuco, Mata Norte Campus, Analyst in Educational Management - Pernambuco Department of Education. Currently Head of the Network Monitoring Center/SEE. Has experience in the field of education, with an emphasis on school management, results management, and historical and educational heritage. Member of GEPHEPE - Study and Research Group on History and Education in Pernambuco.

  • Francisca Juscizete Queiroz de Lima, Secretaria de Educação e Esportes de Pernambuco

    Master's degree in Anthropology from the Federal University of Pernambuco - UFPE (2022), Bachelor's degree in Museology from the Federal University of Pernambuco - UFPE (2022), Specialization in History Teaching Methodology from the State University of Ceará - UECE (2003), Bachelor's Degree in Philosophy (1993/1997). She worked as a teacher of Sociology and Philosophy at the Tecla Ferreira Elementary and Middle School, taught at the São Miguel Educational Center and São Francisco Educational Center - Secretariat of Labor and Social Action /SETAS (1996 to 2009). A civil servant teacher in the State of Pernambuco since 2010, she taught Philosophy at the Emídio Cavalcante de Albuquerque School in Ponte dos Carvalhos (2010-2011). She is part of the teaching staff of the Comprehensive Education Program of the State of Pernambuco. She is currently assigned to EREM - Ginásio Pernambucano da Aurora as Coordinator of the School Museum of Natural History. She is part of the Study and Research Group on the History of Education in Pernambuco - GEPHEPE.
