Abstract

Playing is a relevant opportunity for the development of numerous skills and abilities of the child, consisting of a legally guaranteed right and based on several studies. In a hospitalization situation, access to play can provide welcome, favor the assimilation of information and adaptation to the new routine, help them to deal with the unknown environment, such as the fear resulting from separation from the family nucleus and friends, prepare for procedures, in addition to contributing to the positive management of recovery and possible consequences. Thus, this text aims to report the actions of the extension project “Breath of fresh air: it's time to play” which values free play and the use of therapeutic play in the context of child hospitalization. The project's lines of action are compatible: the first focused on promoting free play with children, adolescents and their families hospitalized in pediatric inpatient units, and the second focused on playing with therapeutic aptitude. Consider that the actions tolerated both for the theoretical-practical training and recreational training of the extension workers and for their integration into the context of child hospitalization through play.
