Abstract
This article analyzes the film And the Band Played On (1993) from a STS Education perspective, discussing how the narrative articulates science, technology, society, and prejudice in the context of the AIDS epidemic. The film highlights the scientific disputes between the United States and France over the discovery of HIV, the ethical dilemmas involving blood banks, and the role of the media in shaping the social perception of the disease. At the same time, it exposes the homophobia and stigmatization that shaped political and social responses to the crisis. Through a critical reading, the article argues that cinema is a relevant educational resource capable of addressing past and present epidemics, such as Covid-19. Therefore, it reflects on the potential of cinema in STS Education by problematizing the impacts of technoscience and prejudice on social life in the context of the discovery of certain diseases.
