Between movements and parties: a study of the participation of black people in the national union of students (1995-2019)

Abstract

This article analyzes the participation of black students in the National Student Union (UNE), highlighting the interactions they developed with political parties, student collectives, and black movement organizations, in the period between 1995 and 2019. Thus, this article aims to understand the relationship these students have with the idea of “autonomy” with the political parties, as well as to explore the complex network of relationships they establish with different organizations of the black movement and university student collectives. The justification for choosing the temporal scope is based on the fact that it was in 1995 that the first election of a black president of UNE took place in 1995, with the victory of Orlando Silva; and last in-person Meeting of Black Men and Women and Quota Members of the entity was held in 2019. The theoretical framework is primarily based on theories of social movements, especially on bibliographical references that focus on social networks and the interaction between parties and movements. The methodology used is qualitative, as it involves the analysis of documents and semi-structured interviews.
