Abstract

This article aims to discuss certain aspects of social life in a small rural village in Galicia, called Cortellas. With a comparison between the different definitions of the analytical category “Casa” and using ethnographic examples from Casa da Fraga or the Xulians, we will try to show some changes and persistence in the social organization of the village and the family. For that, in a first movement we will locate the village and from there we will start the discussion of a theoretical nature, bringing the contributions of authors such as Lévi-Strauss, Pierre Bourdieu and Carmelo Lisón Tolosana, who made important contributions to this analytical category. Finally, we will try to make an articulation between theory and field, going through different processes based on two central events in the social life of the village: the slaughter of the pig and the San Francisco party. Through the description of the functions that are developed in these events we will describe the kinship and neighborhood relations, their activities and positions.
