Bisexualities, latin american cinema and receptions: interpretative possibilities

Abstract

This article discusses the interpretative possibility of bisexual characters in the films And your mother too (2001), Underthrow (2009) and Artificial paradises (2012). To this end, the ideas of “bisexual erasure”, “monosexism”, “monodissidence” and “stereotype” were used as theoretical tools to engage with the works analysed and with five interviews given by different self-identified bisexuals from different parts of Brazil. This effort provided a glimpse into the relationship between academic literature, cinema and reception. These traces show how a repetition of narratives and associations with bisexuality can arouse different feelings and understandings in different people, albeit with a common ground that points to discomfort and a lack of identification with the characters on screen. We also pointed out some possible ways of constructing more meaningful narratives and characters, which could potentially generate greater self-identification for the interlocutors in this research.
