The perspective of black and transgender woman: a reading of Cozy by Beyoncé

Abstract

This paper aims to explore the perspective of Black and transgender women in the lyrics of Beyoncé's song Cozy (2022), analyzing how it contributes to the construction of a more inclusive and diverse historical, cultural, and social narrative, as well as its impact on the lives of those who identify with this identity. To this end, the research object is examined in light of the concepts of identity, according to Stuart Hall (2006); feminism, based on bell hooks (1981) and Kimberlé Williams Crenshaw (1989); the power of the word, according to Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie (2019); and the psychology of colors, by Eva Heller (2013), among others. The study investigates how the subject’s racial and gender identities are represented, how the lyrics emphasize pride and self-acceptance, and how this message promotes a positive and empowering narrative about the experience of being a Black and transgender woman. The analysis demonstrates how the representation of these identities in the lyrics can contribute to greater visibility and recognition, challenge stereotypes and prejudices, and positively impact the self-esteem and self-acceptance of this group, highlighting the complexity and intersection of gender and racial identities in the narrative presented.
