Tensions between freedom of expression and symbolic violence: naturalization of gender violence

Abstract

The phenomenon of violence has been the subject of constant research and studies by scholars in many different fields of knowledge in the field. In this discussion, such manifestations will be explored through their presence in the media sphere, analyzing how the understanding of the relationship between symbolic violence and media contributes to the trivialization of these acts in the social context. Briefly, from a socio-historical perspective, the development of media and its relationship with society will be briefly examined, as well as its relentless pursuit of sensationalism. Finally, with an emphasis on the tensions between freedom of expression and hate speech, a situational analysis will be presented that highlights symbolic violence under the lens of power relations imposed on the feminine. It will demonstrate how media serves as a significant instrument in the naturalization, construction, and maintenance of gender-based violence.
