Abstract

The article revisits Bacchylides’ Fr. 20B (Maehler), the “Encomium to Alexander, son of Amyntas”, in order to present a more careful examination of different and relevant aspects, some previously commented on, while others were not yet contemplated. By doing so, it aims at analyzing the way by which the worlds of the Muses, of Aphrodite, and of Dionysus are intertwined in the web of the song with its threads of wine, desire and delusion. Also, at understanding the way the poet projects each one of these elements that he weaves into his praise-song to the addressee, the son of Amyntas, a Macedonian king.
