Abstract

This text aims to examine some cases of support networks and paradigmatic communities formed by migrants and described by Herodotus, Thucydides, Xenophon, Polybius, and Diodorus. The discussion will focus on the ways in which these migrants constructed them, especially when they did so without necessarily mimicking institutions and political practices of ancient poleis. As theoretical contributions to the discussion, we mainly use Malkin (2011), for studies on the formation of support networks, and Garland (2014), for the issue of migrants in antiquity. With this discussion, we hope to demonstrate that migrating in antiquity was a driving force for promoting new forms of social, economic, cultural, and humanitarian dynamism.
