Abstract
This article discusses the relationship between Aesop's fable “The Eagle and the Beetle” (Ἀετός καὶ κάνθαρος), the proverb Ἀετὸν κάνθαρος μαιεύεται (Zen. Par. I, 20), and verses 694-695 of Aristophanes' play Lysistrata. First, we will study three versions of the fable, as presented in the Hausrath and Hunger edition (1970 [1959]), then we will analyze the proverb preserved in Zenobius (which is the main Greek paremiographic source) and in other collections of proverbs, especially those compiled in the CPG (Corpus paroemiographorum graecorum); we will also consider other sources, such as Suda, the lexicon of Hesychius, and the Adages of Erasmus of Rotterdam. Finally, we will focus on the verses 694-695 from Aristophanes' Lysistrata, where there is an allusion to the fable and/or to the proverb, and some translations of those verses will be commented upon, considering precisely their connection to the fable and the proverb.
