Abstract
This review presents and analyzes the work Ser Filólogo Clássico nos anos 20 do século XXI [Being a Classical Philologist in the 2020s], edited by Pascale Hummel-Israel and Rafael Silva and published in 2024. The book gathers reflections from researchers regarding the challenges, transformations, and possibilities of Classical Philology in contemporary times, structured into three thematic series: Series 1 – “The Classical Philologist: Between Subject and Object” (Pascale Hummel), “The Task of the Philologist” (Jacyntho Brandão); Series 2 – “Metaphilology: For or Against Philology” (Pascale Hummel), “Metaphilology, a Path ‘Through’ Philology: Between Studies” (Júlia Avellar); Series 3 – “Languages and Discourses of Philological Erudition” (Pascale Hummel), “Philology, Its Erudition, Its Languages, and Its Discourse” (Olimar Flores-Júnior). The issues raised throughout the work are highly relevant to the reflection on and development of contemporary philological and literary studies. However, the book does not offer an easy read for those unfamiliar with the field, as it involves numerous concepts and metaphors and requires prior knowledge of some of the authors cited. At various points, the language is dense, making comprehension even more challenging. Nevertheless, the work fulfills its purpose of fostering fundamental debates about philology in the twenty-first century.
