Abstract

The text explores the dynamics of visibility, authorship, and gender between Surrealism, as an artistic movement, and artistic practices on Instagram. Art emerges as a practice intersected by technology, reputation, money, and symbolic contestation. Women artists, once relegated to the decorative role of muse, must now negotiate their existence on platforms that track everything, measure everything, and punish swiftly: likes, reach, engagement, silence. Based on empirical research using the hashtag #surrealism, the article shows that artistic recognition is neither a matter of merit nor a linear progression; it is unstable, unequal, and shaped by algorithms that personalize visibility and reinforce hierarchies. In dialogue with feminist and cyberfeminist theories, the article argues that Instagram has reinvented control through a user-friendly interface. Yet, amid censorship, forced exposure, and burnout, social media remains a space where artists persist, make noise, subvert expectations, and provoke other possible ways of existing.
