Abstract
The disempowerment of nature is a cultural phenomenon based on the assumption that humans have total control over the natural environment. This study investigates how this phenomenon has been represented in the art of painting. It suggests that its roots can be traced back to Romanticism’s depictions of skies rather than to Duchamp’s “nominalism”, where its genesis has been more readily placed by art historians. While studying the unfolding of the process that led to the infamous death of nature, I hope to illuminate how affections, and the lack of such affections, produced by our contact with nature determine our sensibility.
