Abstract

We present a translation of the preface to the book 12 of Columella’s De Re Rustica (1st century A.D.), as well as translations of two other excerpts from the same book. In the preface, the author discusses the roles of the man and the woman in life as a couple according to their physical and “psychological” characteristics, which serves to introduce the main theme of book 12, which is the duties and role of uillica, the manager’s wife (uillicus), in accomplishing and managing the works on the rural property. The other translated excerpts (chapters IV-VI and VIII) are examples of these many tasks to be performed by her.
