Abstract
This article presents an introductory study of Diogenes Laertius’ Life of Xenophon (II.48–59), followed by an annotated Portuguese translation. It begins by discussing some aspects of the ancient biographical genre and the place occupied by Diogenes Laertius’ work within the tradition of philosophical biography. It then examines elements of Xenophon’s reception in antiquity, with particular attention to his characterization as a Socratic philosopher and to the way his life is constructed in the biographical narrative. The aim is to reflect on the relationships between life, philosophy, and biographical writing, as well as on the role played by the Life of Xenophon in the transmission and consolidation of the image of the Athenian author. Finally, the article offers an annotated translation of the text, accompanied by remarks on selected translation choices and interpretative issues raised by the Greek original.
