Abstract
The Portuguese writer José Duarte Ramalho Ortigão (1836-1915) left us many texts about art, such as those collected in the book The Portuguese Art, object of our study. Figure of particular importance for understanding Portuguese art criticism of the nineteenth century, his texts are fundamental to the study of the artistic relations between Portugal and Brazil.
