Resumo
Neste estudo procede-se à exegese e tradução para português do prólogo atribuído ao retor Nicéforo Basilaces, preservado no manuscrito Scorialensis gr. 265. Redigido como preâmbulo editorial da colação das suas obras, o texto grego ultrapassa a função própria de uma composição desse teor, constituindo, de igual modo, um exercício refletivo. Ponderam-se aspetos concernentes à escrita (conceção, estilo, divulgação, utilidade), aos perigos da glória literária, à formação do homem de letras e ao lugar da paideia na construção identitária. Servindo-se de um paradigmático conjunto de referências bíblicas, clássicas e retóricas, Basilaces apresenta, simultaneamente, um testemunho autobiográfico, um manifesto literário, bem como um instrumento hermenêutico. Demonstra-se, por conseguinte, que o prólogo não apenas orienta a leitura da obra que introduz, mas constitui, outrossim, um opúsculo que exige comentário, na medida em que oferece uma representação do autor, da sua atividade intelectual e do legado que pretende transmitir à posteridade. Evidencia-se, desta forma, a importância do πρόλογος para o estudo da consciência autoral e da construção da memória literária na cultura bizantina do século XII.
